Earwigs

Earwigs

Earwigs are about 5/8 inch long, dark reddish-brown in color with light brown legs. They are night-time insects that feed on decomposing plant materials like dahlias, zinnias, clover, hollyhock, strawberry, celery, sunflower, plums, grapes, roses, potatoes, beets, grass, corn silk, etc and dead insects.

The earwig can be readily identified by its distinctive pincer-like tails. Females produce up to 20-60 eggs laid in burrows (called chambers), 2 to 3 inches beneath the soil in one season. They get into homes through entry points like doors and windows, and by crawling up the foundation.

Inspection for Earwigs

During the day, they can be found in shelter under organic matter such as pine straw, leaf litter, mulch, and other debris. They like dark and damp areas like under stones, and sidewalks.

Damage By Earwigs

Earwigs can bite as a defense mechanism. While the bite can be painful, it is not poisonous. Their bite may, however lead to a secondary infection if scratched finger nails.
